Not all private schools are the same although they fall under the label of “private” schools.  Some are better than others as a whole and some are better suited to the individuals’ needs and experiences.

Parents:

  • The martial arts schools who emphasize mostly on martial arts traditions often miss the mark.

  • The practice of martial arts is largely about the development of self-esteem.

  • Therefore, you want to find a martial arts school where the instructors emphasize the effort as well as the result.

Making the right martial arts school selection is an important decision.

At Competitive Edge Karate we recognize that Nothing Beats Experience, and we have over 40 years of Martial Arts experience to show for it. At CEK, we have a Specialized Self-Defense System that not only will help you become a champion in the classroom and competitions, but most importantly, a champion in life.

  • Our emphasis is on personal character development and a teaching approach that is focused on building self-esteem.

  • Our student’s learn that Perseverance is the steadfast pursuit of a task, mission, or journey in spite of obstacles, discouragement, or distraction.

Competitive Edge Karate’s Specialized Self-Defense System was designed with the purpose of Creating Valuable and Positive Change. It is a clear, compelling, principle-driven approach to self-defense training that develops strength and conditioning, confidence in being able to defend yourself and by combining a champion’s mindset with a meaningful message-based approach designed to enhance a student’s overall life skills.  CEK cultivates a student’s sense of self-discovery through self-defense skills.

THE VALUE OF A COMMITTED, EXPERIENCED TEACHER

Kyoshi Roger Dabney, the Master Instructor of Competitive Edge Karate, has been in the martial arts for more than 40 years. Kyoshi is a title that is bestowed upon an instructor of the martial arts. There is a ranking system for belts and levels of black belts and there is also a system of ranking for instructors. The title of Kyoshi is the equivalent to the term “Professor”.

Kyoshi Dabney has been teaching in Henrico’s Far West End for more than 29 years and has worked with the Henrico County School System teaching after school enrichment programs, kid clubs, career days, and he makes an occasional classroom visit at the elementary schools as a guest speaker about martial arts.

It is our goal to raise the quality of life for all of our students in every way possible.
